What are the alternatives to moving into a care home?
Moving into a care home is a big step and there may be alternatives, particularly if you would prefer to stay in your own home. Services that can help you stay in your own home include:
- Help with personal care such as getting up, going to bed, washing and dressing.
- Meals service.
- Equipment to help you manage in the kitchen or bathroom or move around indoors or outside.
- An alarm system so that you could call for help in an emergency.
- Alterations such as grab rails, stairlifts or ramps.
- Day centres or clubs.
- Nursing and other health services.
- Help for the carers who look after you.
- Respite care to give you or your carer a break.
You may also want to consider moving to a kind of housing that is easier to manage or has help or care services available on site. Examples include:
- Retirement (sheltered) housing
- Extra care housing
- Housing specially designed for people who use wheelchairs or have specific cultural needs.
