State Benefits

Grants or subsidised loans for alterations and adaptations

Your local home improvement agency will be able to advise on what is available locally, and whether you qualify. They may also be able to help you arrange any works required.

Disabled facilities grants

Disabled Facilities Grants from local authorities help towards the cost of adapting your home so that you can continue living there. They are means tested. The maximum grant available is normally £30,000 in England and Northern Ireland and £36,000 in Wales. (If you live in Scotland, you should contact your local social services for information on any similar grants that may be available.)

In order to be eligible for a disabled facilities grant you must be disabled and the owner or tenant of the property, and you must certify that you intend to occupy the property as your only or main residence throughout the grant period (currently five years).

Warm Front Grants, Cold Weather and Winter Fuel Payments

Warm Front Grants are a Government funded scheme to make homes warmer and more energy efficient. The amounts payable are up to a maximum of £3,500, or, for oil-fired central heating, £6,000 per home.
