Warden

The job title of the person responsible for managing a sheltered or retirement housing scheme - now more commonly known by titles such as Scheme Manager, House Manager or Court Manager.

Some housing schemes have a resident warden / scheme manager and a 24 hour service, others have visiting and part time wardens. Over the last few years there have been many changes to the warden’s duties, which can vary considerably between schemes. Most wardens are now expected to:

  • Manage the scheme;
  • Build up a relationship with older people living in their schemes; giving residents information on availability and access to services and encouraging them to ask for additional support from statutory and voluntary organisations when appropriate;
  • Summon help in an emergency.
