FirstStop support for the the growing sandwich generation

FirstStop has partnered with Family Lives as they see a substantial increase in the number of parents having to provide care for both their parents and their children. As the UK's demographic continues to change with increasing life expectancy and falling birth rates more older people will be supported in retirement by fewer people of working age. This of course is compounded by many people having children at a later stage of life and children with student debt needing financial support from parents for longer.

The Sandwich Generation, typically middle aged parents but sometimes younger can have dual roles of caring for children and elderly parents which can amount to several hours per week or have dual financial responsibilities for example helping children with their education and early housing needs and contributing towards the cost of their parents care and support.

Family Lives is establishing a greater range of services and support for families who they encounter within the “sandwich generation” utilising FirstStop to provide expertise around domically care and practical aspects around financial and legal help for families facing these later life challenges.

The Family Lives 24 hour helpline can also provide FirstStop callers with out of hours service and the emotional support to complement the detailed practical advice.
